Scott was a tree man. Every year we’d go to Charleston just to hug the trees at Middleton and Boone Hall plantations. He captured the live oaks beautifully with his watercolors. The sweet little painting above was inspired by one of those trips.

Scott often repurposed packaging materials and transformed them into art. The series above, framed in recycled cookie packaging by Scott, has four different tree scenes (all approximately 1.5″ square).

In Goa his love of trees gave way to some magnificent paintings. The one above has an iconic tree along with elements of architecture, mind’s eye, people, faces, and objets d’art…quintessential Scott Morgan fine art. This one below we called “Tree of Life”. There is a river underneath and this was also a theme in many of Scott’s paintings.

These particular palm trees exist at a restaurant overlooking Vagator beach. We had a few very memorable gatherings there while Scott could still enjoy going out with friends.

If you look at the next painting closely, you’ll see “Washington” and “BDI” written on it. Scott’s friend and furniture industry colleague Bill Becker owns BDI Furniture. When Bill heard about Scott’s terminal illness and our plans of going to Goa, he generously stepped up giving us some of his frequent flier mileage points so that we could get from Washington, DC to Los Angeles in First Class. I’m not sure what the “1, 2, 3” refers to except it does look like some sketches of case goods from the BDI line. Perhaps Bill will be showing something similar this weekend at the High Point International Furniture Market.

Don’t you just love how the trees appear through the windows on this next painting? Scott studied architecture with Buckminster Fuller and his influence shows up in Scott’s work often.

Artists can create metaphors visually just as writers can use words. Scott’s painting of trees silhouetted against a brilliant sunset sky captures the essence of his journey’s end.
