my date with liam neeson

Liam Neeson invited me to hang out with him last night in a NYC hotel room. So I did. We sat around talking about coping with grief Liam Neeson-style. We discovered we are kindred souls, Liam and I.

Nobody understands this kind of loss unless they’ve been through it, he said.

Liam told me he was no longer drinking. Not even wine. After his wife Natasha died he drank heavily. He tried to bury himself in his film work. He dated some women. Now he is taking time out to focus on his teen-aged sons.

You must take care of yourself before you can love someone new, I said.

He went to the kitchen to get us some refreshments while I did the yoga baby pose to stretch myself out. I must have fallen asleep on the bed because when I awoke I was under a doublefaced wool blanket: one side was deep red and the other a charcoal gray. I could see Liam asleep on the couch across the room and thought how sweet it was of him to cover me with a blanket and let me dream this dream.

“It’s like a wave. You just get this profound feeling of instability,” he says on Sunday’s “60 Minutes. “The Earth isn’t stable anymore, and then it passes and it becomes more infrequent, but I still get it sometimes”. From an interview with 60 Minutes five years after his wife died.
