In the final weeks of Scott’s life, our cancer specialty psychologist Dr. Ravi told me it would be important to give Scott a focus on a happy vision. Something to take his mind off of the immediate physical pain which was increasing beyond the opiates’ ability to ease. Something to take his mind off of the impending inevitable outcome.

I told Scott to remember he could fly. Up and out of his body he could fly if he wanted to. Like his butterfly painting. Scott corrected me. “We”, he said. “Say WE can fly.” He squeezed my hand tightly and I smiled at him.
