goodbye, sweet boy

In Loving Memory of Hershey Dawg  December 2006-June 2016

Hershey deteriorated rapidly in the past two weeks as we were driving north to Maine with stops along the way to visit friends and family. His joy in sunbathing, his love of tussling with his sister Loolie, his delight in sniffing flowers and eating special treats, his appreciation for a thick chenille blanket…these things never faltered but his body would not co-operate with him. Anxiety and pain marked his days and nights to the point where he could no longer sing his woo-woo song. (To view a video of Hershey singing click here). On his facebook page Hershey will forever be known as the entertainer he was.

With the extremely compassionate and caring team at Maine Coast Veterinary Hospital I said goodbye this morning to one of the sweetest dogs to ever grace the planet.

Loolie and I will get through this together. It comforts me a little to believe that Scott was waiting for him when Hershey woke up somewhere else, no longer confused, no longer in pain. Just free to fly. Missing him already.

I found this poem online.

THE LAST BATTLE

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this — the last battle — can’t be won.

You will be sad I understand,
But don’t let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.

We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn’t want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they’ll tend.

Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.

Don’t grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We’ve been so close — we two — these years,
Don’t let your heart hold any tears.

    • Yes, I believe I heard Scott whisper loudly in my ear “Send him to me.” I swear when Hershey took his last breath I also heard “He’s here. Thanks!”. I’m devastated. While I was listening to the youtube recording of Hershey singing his woo-woo, Loolie started singing along from under the table! Hearing the two of them like that gave me chills and made me realize once again that spirit is here even now.
