don’t fence me in

This abstracted fence combo of railroad ties, picket fence, and chainlink adorned the front of our North Carolina property for nearly 10 of the 12 years I’ve been here. It served a purpose: we had two dogs then and we were away in Maine six months of the year. It also allowed Scott’s imagination to run wild. There was an 8 foot rooster sculpture out there as well until it flew the coop last year. Screen Shot 2018-01-25 at 9.10.26 AM

I knew before I list this house for sale in the spring (I’m moving to Maine!) that this fence would need to come down. An expensive proposition when there are other repairs needed and I am doing all of it on a shoestring budget.Screen Shot 2018-01-25 at 9.11.11 AM

What to do? I listed it on craigslist.org as a “free railroad ties, picket fence, 6 x 6’s, and chainlink fence” in exchange for hauling away. More than a dozen guys responded within the hour. It’s gone now. Forty five rotting rail road ties, six panels of picket fence, and an ugly chain link fence that was never properly installed has been dismantled and hauled away at no charge to me.

Meanwhile, a friend in Maine sent me these pics of my place up there. The fence protecting the orchard has been decimated. This is an annual event and we’re not sure who is the culprit. When I get to Maine, I will follow the same procedure on craigslist and  get this fence removed. The meaning is clear. Watch out world, I’m back. Don’t fence me in!

  1. I LOVE this post. You are inspiring me to just “do it” and get back to blogging…not on furniture but just on life. Am stuck on what to call it. Any thoughts?
