Here is a sampling of the vintage sampler show — A Stitch in Time–currently at Art By Katy Gallery in Stonington, Maine. According to Google: “A needlework sampler is a piece of embroidery or cross–stitching produced as a ‘specimen of achievement’, demonstration or a test of skill in needlework. It often includes the alphabet, figures, motifs, decorative borders and sometimes the name of the person who embroidered it and the date.” These were most likely stitched by island women during the 1930s to 1970s. The collection can be seen July 1-15th (most days noon to 4PM and by chance or appointment).
These are really beautiful!

Thanks, Dan! Scott and I collected these together. I love the black and white silhouette one. Reminds me of Kara Walker’s “Gone…”
