I met Pat when our mutual friend Seemore Simmons brought her to the first Scott Morgan Design Scholarship event we held in High Point, NC. I hosted it at the home I shared with Scott and the event took place during furniture market week a mere one month after he succumbed to cancer in India in 2013. Though that night she was a stranger among family and long time industry friends of ours, my blossoming friendship with Pat quickly became indispensable to me while I navigated the deep ocean of grief I was swimming in on my return from Goa without Scott.
In subsequent months we bonded over discovering that each of us had had prior careers that took us to Hong Kong and Asia on trips too numerous to remember. Pat is married to one of the High Point Furniture Market‘s prominent leaders, is a yoga instructor involved in bringing yoga and meditation practice to under-served women reentering the community after incarceration, a reiki master and so much more. She is one of the most compassionate generous people I’ve ever met and I am forever grateful that she came into my life when I needed her friendship the most. As Ringo Starr joyously sang, “I get by with a little help from my friends.” Don’t we all?
Jump forward exactly 7 years since Scott’s legacy event where we first met. Pat’s only child is suffering from multiple cancer related health issues including brain tumors and a stroke. China Li-Smith is Pat’s 44 year old daughter and she is the mother of two children. This would be a daunting enough scenario, but, add to it the ongoing global COVID19 pandemic and you can imagine how much more of a challenge it is for the entire family. I urge you to check out this recent interview with China’s husband that details their gripping story. There is also a GoFundMe page if you feel inclined to help out.
